Business owners have been reaching out on the Eyewitness News Facebook page where they stated that they are willing to donate their time and money to help rebuild a New London animal shelter that was partly condemned from Hurricane Sandy and is currently housing some animals.
Before Sandy, the shelter housed 14 dogs and about six cats and volunteers said they want the facility fixed.
On Tuesday, landscaping contractor David Beebe and his son toured the facility where a tree fell on top of the building. Since the incident, no repairs have been made to the building.
There are still three dogs being sheltered there, even though debris was scattered around the facility and the ceiling was caved in.
"The kid goes up there to tease a dog, falls, cuts his leg," Beebe said. "Then sues the city for a lot more than the cost to repair it."
Beebe told Eyewitness News that he is offering his services at no cost and is willing to do anything necessary.
"If I don't do it or can't do it, I can find someone who can or will," Beebe said. "I just want to give a little back to the community."
According to volunteers, the roof needs to be replaced as well as the chain-link fence that protects the dogs.
"We can pull this fence out and save the poles and some of the fencing and put it back up and start there," Beebe said. "Like I said, whatever needs to get done we will do."
Volunteer Wendy Eckholm told Eyewitness News that she has been raising money for the shelter and hopes the city will take these business owners up on their offers.
"I think they should allow for that as quickly as possible, allowing the roof to continue to rot is just unacceptable," she said.
Other business owners and volunteers have reached out to Eyewitness News on its Facebook page.
Especially when they learned these dogs, which have been at the shelter for 11 days are without heat and their water bowls freeze overnight.
Beebe said repairing it to building standards is better than the current condition.
"We love animals and we have a little time on our hands, well, in between snowstorms," he said. "And we are just willing to give."
Eyewitness News reached out to the New London Mayor's Office, but calls were not immediately returned.
Tax-deductible donations are being accepted in hopes to rebuild the facility. Anyone interested can call the Animal Welfare League of New London County at 860-447-9363.
The other two dogs can be adopted by calling the New London Animal Control at 860-447-5231.
Both dogs, which are a blue-nosed pit bull and boxer, passed temperament tests.
