NORWICH, CT (WFSB) -

The Norwich Police Department released the names of the officers involved in a standoff where a 52-year-old man was shot and killed Sunday evening.

Police were called to the area of 172 Laurel Hill Ave. at 7:18 p.m. after getting word of a despondent man and were confronted by Michael Dugas, 52.

Police said Dugas, who was a local handyman, refused to respond to orders and later grabbed a handgun from his pocket and pointed it at officers.

At that time, police said they were forced to open fire and hit Dugas. He was brought to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Following the shooting, seven officers were placed on temporary administrative leave:

  • Officer Mark Dean
  • Officer Kyle Besse
  • Officer Greg McDonald
  • Officer Scott Meikle
  • Officer Anthony Marceau
  • Officer Richard Cannata
  • Officer Chase Chiangi

The shooting is still under investigation by state police.
