The Massachusetts State Police bomb squad was called into town on Sunday morning.
Agawam police told CBS 3 that it stemmed from a Feeding Hills resident who brought a suspicious item he found in front of his home to the department headquarters.
He wanted help in dealing with what appeared to be a soda bottle bomb.
Police reached out to the state fire marshal's office, who then asked for the bomb squad to assist.
The contents of the item were tested on the scene and identified on a preliminary basis.
The item is now the subject of a more thorough joint investigation between Agawam police and the state fire marshal's office.
