Metro academy students see how lessons can turn into careers

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Some Metro high school students got a chance Monday to see the lessons they're learning put to use in the real world.

Juniors and seniors at Hillwood's Academy of Business and Hospitality attended a career seminar at Hillwood Country Club.

Metro Nashville Public Schools' academies program allows companies to partner with high schools to help mentor and motivate students and give them ideas about potential careers.

"I think part of the program is creating hope of backgrounds that may not have been as strong, but now they have hope. I think that's exciting, because education is a great equalizer in my mind. And as an industry person that wants to give back, this is the best place to do it," said Thom Druffel, general manager of the Holiday Inn Vanderbilt.

In addition to hospitality and tourism, students in Metro academies could see careers in arts, media and communications; business, marketing and IT; engineering and manufacturing; and health and public services.
