FARMINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

The Farmington Police Department is investigating the theft of a $40,000 diamond after the suspect posed as a customer and took off with the gem.

According to police, a man entered Michael's Jewelers at the West Farms Mall just before noon Tuesday and asked to see the diamond.

However, once in possession of the diamond, the suspect fled from the store.

Police described the man as an African-American man in his late 30s and believed to be 6' with a thin build and shaved head.

He was wearing glasses, blue jeans, tan work boots, large ear rings and a blue and white cross-striped shirt at the time of the theft.

The man fled the mall in a black, four-door Chevy Cruz with a Florida license plate N274GA, police said.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Farmington Police Department at 860-675-2400.
