Police say Wilfred Levine demolished the inside of the store and smashed exterior windows.
NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -
A customer was arrested after police said he smashed the windows at a Dunkin' Donuts in New Britain on Wednesday afternoon.
According to police, a New Britain man used an ax and smashed about seven windows at the Dunkin' Donuts on East Main Street.
The incident started when Wilfred Levine, 63, was loitering outside and was asked by store employees to leave the area.
"He was thrown out of here, because he was drunk," said witness Gary Russo.
However, he returned just before 1:30 p.m. with a full-size ax, witnesses told police.
Levine, who was visibly upset, jumped over the counter with the ax in hand and demanded "two employees who previously escorted him out of the restaurant," police said.
After destroying the inside of the store, he walked outside and smashed the restaurant's windows.
Witnesses also told Eyewitness News that Levine was severely upset about the recent death of his wife. There were about a dozen people inside the store at the time of the incident.
Police arrived and saw Levine with an ax, which the officer demanded him to drop. Additional officers arrived and drew their firearms at Levine.
After police asked him multiple times to drop the weapon, officers said they were forced to use a stun gun to subdue Levine.
"The officers involved in this incident acted with extreme restraint and the utmost professionalism," said New Britain Police Lt. Christopher Chute. "The officers employed sound tactics and were able to subdue the suspect without using deadly physical force."
Levine was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal attempt assault on police and first-degree criminal mischief as well as one count first-degree criminal trespass, possession of dangerous weapon, first-degree criminal attempt to commit assault, interfering with police, breach of peace and reckless endangerment.
Levine is being held on a $750,000 bond.
"I still can't believe he did it," Russo said. "It's not in his character."
No one was seriously injured during the incident.
The incident remains under investigation by the New Britain Police Department.
