WEST HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

Police revealed the cause of death for a West Haven volunteer fire captain arrested last week in Vermont for allegedly having a child as a sex slave for more than 10 years.

State police said Frank Meyer, 39, of West Haven, was found dead Tuesday afternoon in the town of Newfane.

Troopers said they responded to reports of a possible suicide along South Wardsboro Road, and when they arrived they found a man, later identified as Meyer, dead.

A report from the chief medical examiner for Vermont said Meyer died of carbon monoxide poisoning from having a charcoal grill in a tent.

Meyer was suspended form his job and was placed on paid leave effective March 1, pending the outcome of a hearing that was scheduled for Friday.

Meyer and Brett Bartolotta, 42, of Cavendish, VT, were both charged last week with aggravated sex assault and slave trafficking.

Officials said the men bribed a boy, then 12 years old, with money and gifts to perform sex acts with them in Vermont over a period of several years.

The victim is now 25 years old.
