East Hartford officer dies from self-inflicted gunshot wound

EAST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

An East Hartford police officer that shot himself in the head inside police headquarters Tuesday morning has died.

Around 9 a.m., Officer Paul Buchanan was found at the police department suffering from a single gunshot wound to his head.

He was treated at the scene by East Hartford Fire Department paramedics and was brought to Hartford Hospital where he later died from his injury.

The East Hartford Police Department and Connecticut State Police are investigating the shooting.

Buchanan served the town as an officer since 1989. East Hartford police officials said Buchanan's career included working in the Patrol Division as a Field Training Officer, a Community Outreach Officer, and a Fleet and Scheduling Officer.

Officials said he also worked in the Criminal Investigations Division as an investigator.

Buchanan was a highly decorated officer who had two life saving awards, a meritorious service award, and several letters of commendation.
