GROTON, CT (AP) -

The weekend death of a student at the Naval Submarine School in Groton is under investigation.

The Day of New London reports Monday that the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the death of 25-year-old Seaman Apprentice Joshua Allen Woods of Memphis, Tenn. The Navy said Woods was unresponsive when his roommate found him in his bed at their barracks room Saturday morning.

The Navy said the roommate notified school supervisors and Woods was taken by ambulance to a New London hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Woods' funeral was Monday in Tennessee, where he was buried with military honors at the Western Tennessee State Veterans' Cemetery.

The Navy said Woods began the basic enlisted submarine course in May 2012 and graduated in January. He was awaiting his new assignment.
