WILLIMANTIC, CT (WFSB) -
State police are investigating after police shot and killed a suspect in Willimantic Tuesday night.
Two officers were called to an apartment building on the corner of Main and Clark streets just before 8 p.m.
According to police, officers were initially called after a man was seen outside the apartment acting in a threatening manner.
When police arrived, they discovered the man armed with a hatchet. Officers attempted several times to get the man to put the hatchet down, without success.
One officer deployed a Taser, however it was unsuccessful. During the incident, the second officer fired his service weapon at the suspect.
Police said the officer was fearful for the individual's safety and fired his weapon.
The suspect was rushed to Windham Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
It is unclear how many shots were fired.
Police have identified the man involved in the incident, but his name is being withheld pending notification of family.
Investigators remained on the scene gathering evidence well into the early morning hours Wednesday.
The two officers were not hurt and have been placed on administrative duty.
"If it was justified, it was justified," said Keely Santa Lucia, who saw the incident. "I have no opinion on it because I just don't know what happened."
