Police in Naugatuck said Andrew Avenue School was briefly locked down Wednesday morning after someone reported hearing gunshots in the woods adjacent to the school.
Police said they responded to the area of Andrew Mountain Road and Andrew Avenue Extension after reports of gunfire in the area just before 9 a.m.
While there was no threat to the school, police said because of the close proximity to the school it was locked down while officers investigated.
As a result of the search, police said the lockdown was called off, but a police officer will be stationed at the school for the rest of the day.
Police determined that the shots fired were illegal fireworks.
No arrests have been made at this time and the incident remains under investigation.
