NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

Southern Connecticut State University students were warned that a gunman may have been spotted near the campus in New Haven on Wednesday afternoon.

In a text alert to students, there is an unconfirmed report of a man with a rifle near the transfer station on Wintergreen Avenue in Hamden around 2 p.m.

Police have searched that area, but they did not locate anyone with a firearm.

Officers cleared the transfer station around 3:30 p.m.

Mayor Scott Jackson tweeted that the incident was a "non issue."

SCSU was never placed in lockdown, the public relations department said the college wanted to warn students about the incident.

There was no threat to SCSU students, school officials said.

However, two New Haven Schools near Hamden were placed in lockdown.

One of the schools Common Ground High School, however, both have since been released.

People are being told to stay away from the search area as well as the campus.

SCSU police are assisting Hamden and New Haven police departments with the investigation.
