Human skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area in Vernon Wednesday afternoon, which launched an investigation by police.
Police said the remains were found off West Street near South Street by a resident walking through private property.
"It was so out of this world," said Adam Viens. "Unreal. I didn't know if it was real."
He told Eyewitness News that he was looking for scraps at the old Rockville Landfill for a college project when he made the discovery.
"I stumbled across a human skull by the brook," he said.
Viens, who is an art student from Manchester Community College, found a human skull, picked it up, brought it to his house and then contacted the authorities.
"When I saw K-9 roaming the woods, it was unsettling," said neighbor Mary Wheeler. "I just hope whenever this is all settled, someone can find some peace in knowing to who those remains belong."
A search of the area was conducted with the help of a cadaver dog.
The investigation is being headed by Vernon police with the assistance of the Tolland State's Attorney's Office, Connecticut State Police Major Crimes and the officer of the chief medical examiner.
Police told Eyewitness News they are expected to be on the scene collecting evidence Friday morning and could be there for a few days.
"I think it's pretty crazy," said neighbor Derrah Nelson. "We saw police show up yesterday, we had no idea what was going on."
Police Lt. William Meier told Eyewitness News its way too soon to say much about any potential unsolved missing persons cases as well.
"It's still very early and preliminary at this time," he said.
Investigators said they are looking into all possibilities, including at least two active missing persons cases from the 60s and 70s in this area of the state, as well as all other types of potential situations.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Vernon detectives at 860-872-9126. Callers may remain anonymous.
