5 people taken to hospital after ceiling collapse at UConn Health Center

Emergency officials in Farmington were called after a portion of the ceiling at the University of Connecticut Health Center collapsed on multiple people Thursday afternoon.

According to authorities, five workers from Wise Construction were injured when a part of the ceiling that they were working on fell on them at about 2 p.m.

"This part was under renovation as it has been for quite some time and will be for quite some time," said Christopher DeFrancesco of UConn Health Center.

All of them had to be taken to the hospital for medical treatment. All the injuries were non life-threatening and four have since been treated and released, hospital officials said.

There were no other patients or employees in that section of the building when the collapse occurred.

The incident happened on the fourth floor of the L building, where laboratory work is done.

Other lab work on nearby floors continued on after the incident, hospital officials said.

"The floors below, where laboratory work is done, were active, working spaces," DeFrancesco said. "Those have not been disrupted. That's all continuing."

Construction work on the building halted for the day.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the collapse.
