State pier improvements to be studied

NEW LONDON, CT (WFSB) -

The state bond commission is reinvesting in the state pier in New London to the tune of $6.1 million.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's office said the Deep Water Port improvements would go toward design, reconstruction and enhancement of the port's warehouse and pier, creating dozens of construction jobs.

The city's mayor is thrilled.

"Excellent to be investing in our infrastructure, particularly our waterfront, which is our best asset," said New London Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio. "We are a deep water port and these types of investments are critical to our future economic success."

The Connecticut Deep Water Port strategy study shows potential growth opportunities to export goods as well as import copper, steel, lumber and fresh food.
