The Putnam Police Department is looking for a man who followed a young girl to Putnam Middle School.
Few details about the incident have been released, but authorities said the incident occurred near the intersection of Woodstock Avenue and Providence Street on Friday morning.
Police confirmed to Eyewitness News that at no time did he make physical or even verbal contact with her.
It's unclear how long he trailed her.
There are no reports of the man being seen in town since the incident.
School administrators called police and notified parents. Officials had police and other staff members along the walking routes home.
While a lot of parents appreciate the extra measures, they chose to pick their children up themselves.
"I'm very happy with the way the school handled this situation," said parent Melinda Grinshaw. "I've seen a lot of teachers out on the streets today, so hopefully that will prohibit them from trying anything."
The sidewalks along Putnam Middle School were eerily empty Friday afternoon and many parents decided to pick up their children.
"They need to be on buses," said parent Stephanie Hoenig. "Because it's just not safe."
Parent Stephanie Bates said she picked up her child as a precaution.
She also told Eyewitness News that if their child lives less than a mile from the school, they don't have bus service.
"I would be comfortable if there was a bus that would be available," Bates said.
Police believe the suspect is a black male in his 40s of average height and medium build.
Anyone with any information is asked to call the Putnam Police Department at 860-928-6565.
