By now, you've noticed warm temperatures this week, and a lucky few have also noticed snakes stepping out to bask in the sun. So what do you do if you see one on a trail head, or even in your backyard?
It all depends where you find the snake. If it's on a trail, a snake remover may have some trouble getting that snake down. But there are some simple things you can do to make sure you don't get hurt.
"It's warming up. We need to be aware," said Daniel Marchand with the Phoenix Herpetological Society. "We need to start thinking, these things are going to start coming out again."
He said when the weather heats up, snakes come out of hibernation - and into your yard.
"Those are all common things we get, in the backyard, under the grill, near the planter, in the tool shed," Marchand said. He said they've had at least 20 calls this week reporting snakes, and removed 10 of them.
His advice: if you see one, don't agitate it or try to kill it.
"Always take just one step away from the snake. One large step puts you over three feet away from the snake. You're out of danger," Marchand said.
"Just because you see a snake, you don't need to call 911," said Capt. Troy Caskey with the Phoenix Fire Department. "What we worry about is if actually if there was a snake bite."
He said while they haven't been out on any snake calls yet this year, they went out on 29 snake calls in 2012. He said it helps to have a cell phone in case you get bit, but the best advice is common sense.
"A lot of people wear iPods or are talking on the cell phone, not paying attention," Caskey said. "You have to be aware of your surroundings."
