SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -
Although the area hasn't received much snow, the winter weather that has fallen is making for some tricky travel conditions on the roadways.
Accidents are being reported throughout Genesee County and up into the Tri-Cities. Most of those crashes reported on I-69 near the Bristol Road exit in Genesee County and northbound I-75. There were also reports of traffic back ups on SB I-75 in Genesee County but those appear to have been cleared.
WNEM also received reports of numerous accidents on U.S. 10, both east and westbound earlier Tuesday morning. There was word of an accident near the M-47 interchange with U.S. 10 that has many vehicles involved but it appears the scene has been cleared. We received a report of an accident on WB U.S. 10 east of Stark Road in Midland County. That situation has been resolved.
Light snow is going to continue Tuesday as a cold front moves through mid Michigan. Snow will be widespread and produce 1" of accumulation Tuesday morning.
It will be a blustery, wintry day. Westerly winds gusting between 30 - 40 mph will bring cold air to the region as high temperatures only reach the upper 20s. Occasional snow showers are also in the forecast with accumulations less than 1" possible by the end of the day.
This is nothing compared to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. A late winter storm is dumping snow in the area, with up to 2 feet forecast in places.
The National Weather Service says Tuesday morning that the Upper Peninsula community of Menominee got 5 inches over a six-hour period Monday.
Snow is to continue Tuesday, Wednesday and into Thursday, with 10 to 24 inches expected near Houghton, Ironwood, Baraga and the Porcupine Mountains. The weather service says 8 to 18 inches is forecast in the Munising area by Thursday morning.
Heavy lake-effect snow is expected along Lake Superior. Occasional white-out conditions are forecast Tuesday and Wednesday.
If you are looking for more spring-like weather, you will have to wait till the end of the week and weekend. Some sunshine is expected and temperatures for your weekend will be in the lower to middle 40s.
Spring officially starts on Wednesday at 7:02 AM EDT.
