A Portland theater canceled an upcoming show for folk singer Michelle Shocked after she reportedly went on an anti-gay rant during a performance this week in San Francisco.
Witnesses say the singer-songwriter started quoting the Bible on stage at Yoshi's Jazz Club, saying that God hates all homosexuals.
"She started talking about hypocrisy in the Bible and that the end of days are coming, and then took it to a whole other level and said some words that pretty much offended everyone in the venue," said Lisa Bautista, the director of marketing at Yoshi's.
The rant by Shocked, who now identifies as a born-again Christian, triggered venues across the nation to cancel her shows, including at the Alberta Rose Theatre in northeast Portland.
Owners immediately posted this message to their Facebook page after learning about what happened:
"We are deeply saddened by today's news regarding Michelle Shocked, but our decision to cancel her show was an easy one to make. "
Instead, the theater says it's hosting a benefit concert for Basic Rights Oregon on the same day and time Shocked would have played.
"I think what it shows is that Oregonians value tolerance and basic fairness and treating others like they want to be treated," said Amy Ruiz of Basic Rights Oregon.
It seems the decision to drop the singer's show in April is one that many seem to support.
Among the hundreds of comments on the theatre's Facebook page, Chris Robson writes:
"I stand behind you in your decision, I think it is sad where she has gone with her life, thank you for doing the right thing."
Howard Bales also posted this comment to the theater's Facebook page:
"I loved her album, and I hate what she just did. Thanks for canceling the show."
The theater says they are unsure of what acts will play in the benefit concert, but one thing is for certain, they hope to turn the situation into something positive.
"The outpouring of support to make the benefit successful is overwhelming and demonstrates how much Oregonians want to work together to make a more equal place for everybody," said Ruiz.
In response to all of the backlash, on Twitter Shocked wrote:
"Truth is leading to painful confrontation."
The Alberta Rose Theatre says that if you've already bought tickets for Shocked's show and don't want to be a part of the benefit concert, they will issue you a full refund.
