West Springfield woman meets stranger who donated his kidney

A West Springfield woman got a chance to meet the man who gave her a second chance on life by donating his kidney.

"I walked in the door and the only thing I could do was walk up to him and give him a big hug. I mean it was just fantastic actually meeting him," said Elizabeth Bloomberg.

Wednesday morning Bloomberg met 25-year-old Gregory Madan, the man who selflessly donated a kidney to a woman he didn't even know.

"I've been fortunate to live a very healthy life to have a lot of great opportunities in my life and I wanted to give back to somebody else," said Madan.

Bloomberg had been on dialysis for 13 months. She had to receive the treatment three days a week for four hours each day.

"It was very tiring and it really changed my whole life," said Bloomberg.

Her daughter, Stacy Bloomberg, tried to give one of hers, but they weren't a match. So, Stacy Bloomberg entered an exchange program where she donated a kidney to a stranger and someone else would give their kidney to her mom.

"She just wasn't herself so we had to do something to make her life better," said Stacy Bloomberg.

Several months back Madan was matched with Elizabeth Bloomberg and in October the surgery was performed.

"I'm just very thankful," said Elizabeth Bloomberg.

Today the two are both doing great and say they're so happy they got to meet one another for the first time.

"There just aren't any words to thank him," said Elizabeth Bloomberg.

"It was a little surreal but I'm so glad I met her, she has a great personality, and she's really funny," said Madan.

As for Stacy Bloomberg, her kidney went to a stranger she's never met.

"If I can help someone else and she can get help at the same time then it was all worth it," said Stacy Bloomberg.

Transplant coordinators from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Baystate Medical Center worked together to make the exchange possible.
