Groundbreaking for the first phase of the New Haven Downtown Crossing project is set to begin Friday.
Route 34 will be removed to connect the hill neighborhood to the downtown area. Residential and retail developments are planned for the new area.
The road was originally built in the 1950s. Construction of the roadway required for hundreds of families to be displaced and buildings to be destroyed.
City officials said the project could boost the economy of the Elm city.
