Police have found a body badly burned behind a wooded area in West Haven Wednesday afternoon.
Few details have been released, but officials said the body was found in the woods behind a parking lot in the area of 12 Boston Post Road around 2 p.m.
Investigators said the body was not "immediately identifiable."
"It looked like a stretcher and carrying somebody out," said witness Brian Rodgers.
Police remain on the scene investigating the discovery. Fire crews used their ladders out to get a better vantage point of the crime scene.
Neighbors said there's rarely any activity around this area and some even walk their dogs in the area.
"There's no houses down there," said neighbor Gary Gray. "You can walk down there at night and you never know what can jump out at you."
Neighbors also told Eyewitness News they didn't see flames, smoke or any other signs of a disturbance.
However, neighbors told Eyewitness News that the wooded area is usually a hangout for homeless people and with the weather beginning to turn, many said they've seen the homeless population return.
A forensics team was called to the scene and detectives interviewed the homeless population along the West River.
