MIDDLETOWN, CT (WFSB) -

The Middletown Police Department arrested a 27-year-old man after he allegedly made suicidal threats Thursday afternoon.

Jerame Henderson, who was already on probation, was arrested for DUI on Friday.

According to police, Henderson told his probation officer that he was going to harm himself with a firearm, instead of going to jail.

He also threatened to commit random crimes, police said.

Investigators said they were "having concerns about a firearm in the hands of a potentially unstable person posed obvious concerns for the team and officers" and did a welfare check at his home.

The Middletown Police Department along with the SWAT team swarmed the 200 block of Spencer Drive, where Henderson's home is located, around 3 p.m.

In the meantime, officers ordered a nearby family daycare to seek shelter in their basement. Children were removed as their parents arrived to pick them up.

"It was a little scary," said Savannah Mayhew, whose mother-in-law owns the daycare. "I didn't know what was going on."

Police determined that Henderson does not own a firearm.

Detectives were able to make cell phone contact with Henderson, however, he hung up on the officers.

Investigators pinged his cell phone to his location and a police negotiator was able to convince Henderson to turn himself in to police.

Henderson was no seriously injured during the incident, police said.

He was evaluated by Mobile Crisis and will be charged with probation violation.

In December 2009, Henderson was involved in a domestic violence incident in New Britain.

He was charged with first-degree criminal trespass, second-degree strangulation, second-degree unlawful restraint, third-degree assault in the third-degree and violation of a protective order.
