Norwich man arrested for criminal possession of handgun

Posted: Updated:

The Norwich Police Department arrested a convicted felon after investigators said he was in possession of a handgun and caused a disturbance at his apartment complex.

Officers were called to an apartment on Summit Street at 1:20 a.m. and arrested 32-year-old Steven A. Velez of Norwich after he would not cooperate with police.

After a search of the area with a K-9 unit, police found a revolver and a cell phone belonging to Veldez.

During their investigation, police said a female acquaintance of Veldez, Sholanda Washington, interfered with police and was arrested.

Velez was charged with criminal possession of firearm, carrying pistol without pistol permit, interfering with police officers and breach of peace.

He is being held on $500,000 bond and expected to appear at Norwich Superior Court Friday.

Washington, 30, was charged with breach of peace and is scheduled to appear at Norwich Superior Court on April 11.
