The Hamden community is grieving Friday night after a freak accident killed a 12-year-old girl.
Gabriela Hudak was hit in the head by a falling tree trunk that rolled off another tree it was leaning on. She spent a week in the hospital and died Thursday.
She was a student at Hamden Middle School.
Gabriela, who was known as Gabby, is being remembered for being an avid reader, a caring member of her community and a friend to all.
"Gabby was one of those few kids who got along with everyone. She was smart, kind, talented and a true pleasure to be around. She loved school, and everyone in school loved her," one of her teachers said in the release.
Gabriela's mother told Eyewitness News her daughter had dreams of being a neurologist and said she can't believe she's gone.
"You just have to live in the moment because you never know what can happen or when it could happen," one neighbor told Eyewitness News.
A service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Dunbar United Methodist Church of Christ on Benham Street in Hamden to celebrate Gabby's life.
Counselors will be available at Hamden Middle School on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
