An Australian diplomat who helped to develop that country's submarine force is planning a tour of the Groton shipyard of Navy contractor Electric Boat.
Australian Ambassador Kim Beazley is touring the shipyard on Tuesday with U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney.
Beazley is a former defense minister for Australia who played a key role in launching the country's diesel-electric, Collins-class submarines.
Electric Boat, a division of General Dynamics, is the Navy's primary contractor for Virginia-class nuclear attack submarines. It also working on designs for a new ballistic missile submarine to replace the Ohio-class boats.
Beazley has been Australia's ambassador to the United States since 2010.
