A judge is denying attempts to scuttle a scheduled hearing on a convicted serial killer's competency to waive further appeals so he can be executed as soon as possible.
Dale Hausner was convicted of six murders and numerous other crimes in a series of random shootings in the Phoenix area in 2005 and 2006. Victims included pedestrians, bicyclists and animals.
A recent order by Judge Roland Steinle of Maricopa County Superior Court denies a motion by prosecutors to cancel the competency hearing scheduled later this month.
Steinle also denied motions by a lawyer for Hausner to disqualify the Attorney General's Office from the case and to rule that the death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment.
Finally, Steinle denied a psychiatrist's request to withdraw as the court-appointed expert.
