UConn revealed the new logo for Jonathan the Husky Thursday evening.
The logo change is part of the rebranding of the university, which included changing the using of UConn instead of the University of Connecticut "in all signage, publications, advertising and marketing activities," school officials said.
School officials said the new "aggressive" logo is inspired by comments made by coaches and student-athletes at the university.
"This logo is everything that a Husky is supposed to be - powerful, aggressive, determined," said UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma. "It is looking right through you and saying 'Do not mess with me.' This is a streamlined, fighting dog, and I cannot wait for it to be on our uniforms and court."
The new uniforms, which will feature the new logo for the 24 athletic teams at the university, will be unveiled this fall.
However, later this month, the logo and UConn mark will appear at various Division of Athletics buildings.
"Our student-athletes and coaches believe that the new Husky dog logo boldly reflects values such as pride, loyalty, strength, determination, and athleticism," said Warde Manuel, who is the director of athletics at the university. "They are all very excited to wear it into competition and to see it displayed prominently in our facilities. The new logo is a significant piece of the new visual identity of UConn Athletics."
