HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

For the UConn women's basketball team, Sunday was time to celebrate as a parade and rally was held in their honor after winning their eighth title earlier this week.

The UConn Huskies defeated Louisville Cardinals 93-60 Tuesday night.

On Sunday afternoon, the Hartford Business Improvement District and the MetroHartford Alliance along with the City of Hartford, the State of Connecticut and other organizations held a parade and rally in the team's honor.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who attended the game in New Orleans as well as the NCAA Hockey Championship Game that saw an all-Connecticut final, told the hundreds gathered at the north steps of the State Capitol building.

"Nothing could top what these young ladies did this last month," said Malloy, who took a group photo with the team before the parade started.

The last title for the UConn Women's Team was in 2010.

"I get paid to do this...what I don't understand is, you guys do this for the hell of it.. it's unbelievable," said UConn Women's Basketball Coach Geno Auriemma during the rally that followed the parade.

Auriemma said he was going to make "no predictions" for next year and enjoy this win for a little bit.

However, his tone quickly changed and said his coaches and him would start getting ready for next season in about two weeks.

"We are going to start laying out the ground work for what we have to do in May," Auriemma said. "So that in 12 months, we can be standing in front of you again."

Senior Kelly Faris, who was the only player to speak after the team took a "victory lap" around the Storrs campus, thanked the fans for their "passion" and sticking with the team through its "ups and downs" this season.

"I truly believe we have the best fans in the country," Faris said.
