As the small community of West continues to pick up the pieces, stories of heroes continue to emerge from the devastating tragedy.
While in West for three days, KCBD's crew caught up with many who rushed into the chaos while hundreds were being evacuated.
Doctor and West resident Jill Lednicky is just one of those who didn't think twice about her own safety. "We were putting the boys to bed when we heard the boom," she said. "I parked my vehicle right in front of the school administration building and ran to the field where the triage was set up."
The unbelievable scene was hard for Jill to take in. "The nursing home patients were on the curbs in wheelchairs or lying on the ground with various head or limb injuries. The only thought I could think of is this fire is still burning 200 yards away. I was scared by we still needed to get the patients out of there," she said.
While Jill and other doctors, nurses and volunteers waited for emergency vehicles and ambulances to arrive, people like Wesley Adcock stepped up to help. "Once I showed up it was complete chaos. I don't really know how to describe it to be honest," Wesley said. Immediately Wesley began putting elderly patients that were injured into his car to take them to the hospital.
"I took three people in my car personally. I wish I could've done more. I wish I had a bigger vehicle," he said with tears in his eyes. "When I came back they told me I couldn't take anymore. I didn't really know what to do so I left and went to a church. The doors were locked so I sat on the steps and just prayed."
As the chaos settled and town became bare, the reality began to sink for Jill and those who knew the first responders who died in the explosion. "The hardest is knowing the ones who have young kids. We just want to help them," she said. "It's a risk anytime a fire fighter, police officer or EMS go out of their home… there's always that risk they won't return. You just never think it's going to happen in your own community."
"I just pray the ones that are hurt have a speedy recovery and the ones who lost their lives… I just pray God took them with open arms. They are in a better place now," Wesley said.
On Wednesday four members of the Lubbock Honor Guard will be headed to West to take part in the memorial services for the fallen first responders and other victims.
President Barak Obama and his wife will also be attending memorial services scheduled for Thursday.
