Jersey thefts led to soccer coach arrest for child porn

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A Lee's Summit soccer coach is accused of secretly making sexually explicit videos of preteen girls and molesting one of the girls on his team.

Authorities say they discovered the cache of videos after Joel D. White was caught stealing jerseys and other memorabilia at a sporting event. At least four preteen girls have been identified as victims.

Federal prosecutors charged the 40-year-old man with producing child porn last year. White coached two girls soccer teams, and one mother said her daughter traveled to Florida with White, according to court documents.

White told investigators that he installed a camera inside his bedroom so he could record videos of them nude while changing clothes, according to court documents. He confessed to fondling and molesting one girl and recording the lewd acts, according to court documents.

"He stated that he videotaped the nude minors 10 to 15 times without their consent and it went from approximately May of 2012 to October 2012," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

He told investigators that his victims were 11 and 12 years old, according to court records.

The mother of one of the victims told Lee's Summit police on Tuesday that her daughter was on White's soccer team and had been to his residence multiple times. The girl even traveled to Florida with him.

The mother of a 12-year-old girl told police Tuesday that her daughter was on White's soccer team and had been to his home.

Unusual circumstances led to White's arrest, prosecutors said.

White had received a credential as a reporter to cover a World Cup qualifying match in Colorado. White traveled to Colorado in March.

"While White was inside the stadium, he was ultimately arrested for theft of several items to include All-Star jerseys and other memorabilia," according to court records. "At the time of his arrest, White had numerous cameras and other digital media storage devices."

A detective with the Commerce City Police Department asked to inspect the cameras, saying he wanted to see whether White was placing ads on sites such as Craigslist.com to sell the stolen goods.

Instead, the detective said he found "disturbing images of nude minors," according to court documents. In one of the videos, White could be seen positioning a camera in his bedroom so that it was hidden. A preteen girl then entered the room and changed clothing, according to authorities.

The Colorado detective obtained a search warrant and examined additional videos on April 19, and found more nude videos. The detective then contacted police.

The court documents do not explain why detectives waited so long between White's arrest in March until last week to review the videos.

Lee's Summit police were contacted April 19. Court records did not explain why Lee's Summit authorities weren't immediately contacted after police said they found nude videos on White's cameras he had in Colorado.

On Monday, Lee's Summit police searched White's home and interrogated the suspect.

In 2007, White was charged with eavesdropping in Johnson County. That charge was later amended to criminal trespassing and he pleaded guilty. White was given a one year probation sentence.
