PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Former state Senate President Russell Pearce spoke at a Second Amendment rights rally at the state Capitol Saturday afternoon.
Pearce has remained relatively quiet since he lost a recall election a year and a half ago.
Pearce wasn't shy about getting in front of the camera Saturday. He told CBS 5 News he was at the rally to get people fired up and hold our elected officials accountable.
"Any elected official who puts his name on a bill that intrudes and violates the constitutional Bill of Rights should be impeached or removed from office. It's a direct violation of their oath of office," said Pearce.
District 27 state Rep. Ruben Gallego called Saturday's outburst typical of Pearce.
"Russell Pearce is just fear mongering like he usually does to try to stir up anger," said Gallego.
Gallego said the government is not proposing any type of gun takeaway. Instead, he wants to make sure whoever is buying a gun has a right to own that gun.
"As you know, there are people that are on the terrorist watch list that have no felonies and by law they can go buy a weapon. That is a loophole we need to close, and if Russell Pearce thinks that I should be impeached because I'm trying to protect the security of this country from terrorists buying weapons, he's just in the wrong," said Gallego.
State Attorney General Tom Horne and Superintendent of Arizona's Department of Education John Huppenthal were also at the rally supporting gun rights.
