SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

With the primaries for the upcoming U.S. Senate special election just days away, Republican candidates running for John Kerry's seat made a last-minute push through Western Mass this weekend.

Former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan passed through the area on Saturday.

Northampton native and state Rep. Dan Winslow came through Chicopee early Sunday morning.

Also Sunday morning, Republican front-runner and businessman Gabriel Gomez toured West Springfield and Springfield.

CBS 3 caught up with Gomez, who said he feels good entering primary day.

"When the poll came out a week or so ago that had us in the lead, where we surged from last to first, it was not surprising," said Gomez.  "That is the sense I have had from going out around the state. I am just getting a lot of enthusiasm from the campaign."

U.S. Reps. Ed Markey and Stephen Lynch are vying for the Democratic nomination.

Both primaries are set for this coming Tuesday.
