The New York Jets have released backup quarterback Tim Tebow.
The Jets acquired Tebow from the Broncos before last season and he arrived to incredible hype, with more than 200 reporters packing his introductory press conference. But the excitement didn't translate to the playing field where he was essentially a nonfactor in 2012, playing just 72 offensive snaps all season.
Many assumed it was only a matter of time until Tebow was cut, especially after the Jets drafted quarterback Geno Smith in the second round of last week's NFL Draft. Smith became the sixth quarterback on the Jets roster.
"We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow," said Jets head coach Rex Ryan. "Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped. Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward."
