NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

A New Haven man told police that he tried to sell his iPhone and was robbed and assaulted for his troubles Sunday night.

According to police, the man contacted a friend about selling the Apple product, who said he had an interested buyer.

The two men met to make the exchange near the intersection of Willow and Orange streets around 9 p.m.

A green Ford Explorer pulled up and the victim showed the suspect, who was later identified as John Vasso, 23, of East Haven.

The victim told police that Vasso punched him in the face and took his iPhone before fleeing the scene.

The victim said the two other men in the Ford Explorer also assaulted him.

On Monday afternoon, Vasso contacted police to "tell his side of the story."

According to police, Vasso said the victim owed him money and took "the phone as partial payment."

Vasso was arrested and charged with second-degree robbery, third-degree assault, second-degree breach of peace and conspiracy to commit the robbery.
