Conn. mulls new waste storage at nuclear plant

The Connecticut Siting Council is set to decide on a request by Millstone nuclear plant to significantly expand nuclear waste storage capacity.

Millstone Power Station's owner Dominion Resources Inc. is asking for permission to increase storage at the Waterford site from 19 now to 135 dry cask storage units by 2045.

The Siting Council approved the proposal in a straw poll last month and a formal vote Thursday is expected to ratify that decision.

Millstone spokesman Ken Holt said increasing storage is not the plant's first choice. He says Millstone must act because federal officials have not found a storage site for nuclear waste.

In dry cask storage, spent fuel cooled for at least a year is surrounded by inert gas in casks, which are typically steel cylinders welded or bolted closed.
