Moms rally in Amherst for gun control legislation

A relatively new group rallied at the town common on Saturday to push for stronger gun control laws across the country.

Approximately 40 people showed up to the rally put on by "Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America".

The Western Mass chapter started up in January, shortly after the national chapter was formed in response to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Saturday's guest speaker, State Rep. Ellen Story, said in order to make a change, members need to look outside of their own state.

"We are surrounded by states who have their own delegations that are still trying to figure out how they can do this, still get money from the N.R.A. and still get elected," said Story. "So they are the ones that need to hear from people who are their constituents."

Saturday's rally was the kickoff of a week's worth of events for Moms Demand Action groups across the country.

They will culminate with marches in several large cities next week, which coincides with Mother's Day.
