The city of Springfield battled multiple brush fires late Saturday afternoon, into the early evening.
A significant fire took place off of Verge Street around 6:30 p.m.
Dennis Leger, aide to Fire Commissioner Joseph Conant, told CBS 3 that the blaze was likely started by a passing train.
Ludlow firefighters were called in to help fight the fire.
Leger said they could not estimate exactly how many acres the fire consumed.
Springfield firefighters were also called to the campus of Western New England University around 4:30 p.m. for what Leger described as a large brush fire.
It happened in the woods behind the school.
Leger characterized the fire as large because it took three companies to extinguish it.
As of 8 p.m. Saturday, that fire was out.
