New Haven man in critical condition after thrown from the hood of a car

Emergency crews responded to a serious accident where a man was thrown from the hood of a car.

It happened in the area of Shepard Street and Bassett Street around 8 p.m. Police said a man was riding on the roof a Chevrolet Cavalier. When the driver hit the brakes, the man was thrown off the car.

Michael Carey, 21, of New Haven, was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he is listed as being in critical condition. Police said he is conscious, but unable to speak to investigators.

Naquasia Ricks, of West Haven. was the driver of the car. Officials said Carey drove on the hood of the car willingly.

The Crash Investigation Unit collected evidence from the scene and interviewed the people involved including two passengers.
