Just days after selling packages and taking payments from customers, Aztec Sun Tanning in Storrs closed its doors.

The lights are off, the doors are locked and the tanning beds are long gone. Channel 3 Eyewitness News is digging deeper to figure out what happened, and what will come of all those customer payments.

"When I purchases the package, I was not the only person there purchasing packages," said one customer that asked not to be identified. "There were probably three other young ladies there at the time."

The woman said she bought the $20 introductory package on April 28, and made the decision to go tanning the next weekend. Now instead of working on a base tan, this woman said she feels burned.

"The first thing I saw was the sign listing the hours the business is supposed to be in operation," she said. "I was within the hours. I tried to open the door and it was locked. That's when I looked inside and saw everything was gone."

Guy Lefore works at the convenience store next door, and he said it was like they were here one day and gone the next.

"They had been in business for a long time," he said. "So it was a big surprise for all of us. They pretty much removed themselves sometime the night before, nobody saw them."

The frustrated customer said she called Aztec Sun Tanning's other location in Norwich.

"I was told by the person on the phone that she was in the dark as everyone else was on the matter," she said. "She wouldn't give me my money back and there was no manager I could speak to."

So she reached out to Channel 3 Eyewitness News for help.

Our crew headed to Norwich looking for someone in charge to get to the bottom of the situation, but the employee said the manager only stops in periodically.

We also did some digging into Aztec Sun Tanning LLC. The Department of Consumer Protection said there are no complaints on file.

The same went for the Eastern Highlands Health District, which would inspect the Storrs salon if it received a complaint.

Aztec Sun Tanning LLC is also not accredited with the Better Business Bureau, but there is one complaint for a "problem with product and service."

An online review posted in March on Yahoo claims the salon had unreliable hours, with one customer saying they tried going there six times, only to have it be closed four of those times.

As for what's next, the unidentified customer said the Storrs location was convenient and close to her job. She's not interested in driving to Norwich and just wants a refund.

"I would just like to get my money back," she said. "I didn't spend an exorbitant amount of money, but it was more the principle of it."
