New bike locks attached to meters in New Haven to help prevent thefts

Posted: Updated:

New Haven isn't just adding new bike paths, they are also adding places to securely lock up your bike.

The new bike lock areas are part of the parking meters that have been upgraded throughout the city.

Dave Buscarello of Wolcott was on mile 20 when Eyewitness News caught up with him in the downtown area. He said one frustration for riding a bike is sometimes not having a place to lock it up so you can leave it and not worry about it.

"A lot of times I stop at a store and I just have to lean it up against the glass," he said. "Bikes don't have kick stands these days, so yeah. The more places to lock them securely would be better."

New Haven installed these new devices on some of the posts for the new credit card parking meters.

They slide over the post and create two large areas to lock your bike to or like multiple bikes to.

"Being able to lock it up to the proper place is more important, so it's not obstructing people getting in and out of their cars," said Matthew Feiner of Devil's Gear Bike Shop. "The more opportunity to become more bike friendly is better, get people on the bikes coming to work and get cars off the highways."

Because the parking lock up areas go right over the credit card meters, the goal is to have them throughout town.
