DANBURY, CT (AP) -

Newtown's first selectman and school superintendent were honored during graduation ceremonies at Western Connecticut State University.

First Selectman Pat Llodra and former Newtown Superintendent of Schools Janet Robinson each received the school's President's Medal on Sunday for their actions after December's shooting rampage at the Sandy Hook Elementary school, which left 26 people dead.

Shooter Adam Lanza briefly attended the university, which is about 10 miles from the elementary school.

Llodra, a Western Alumna, urged the more than 650 graduates to make themselves a part of a community and serve others, while Robinson told them they won't always be able to control what happens to them in life, but they can control their response.

Western President James Schmotter called the women role models for courage, compassion and professionalism.
