Former Middletown police officer charged with possession of child porn

CROMWELL, CT (WFSB) -

Following a court appearance Monday, a former Middletown police officer accused of being in possession of child pornography is not allowed to have contact with children.

Samuel DiProto, 61, was arrested on May 7 at his residence and charged with possession of child pornography that included sex acts involving a girl as young as 7 years old. 

Investigators seized several items including computers, hard drives and thumb drives from DiProto's home in Cromwell, which is located near a daycare center.

"Yeah people are worried," said neighbor Paul Walsh. "They're concerned."

According to a police spokeswoman, DiProto was a member of the Middletown Police Department from Sept. 21, 1987 to Aug. 19, 2009. He retired in 2009.

DiProto appeared in federal court in Hartford on Monday. He was released on a $250,000 bond to his cousin.

Because his home is so close to a daycare, he will not be able to return to it until after the court proceedings.

Judge Donna F. Martinez decided in court that DiProto was not allow to leave his cousin's house expect for court appearances and mental health appointments at The Connection, Inc. where he will undergo mandatory sex offender treatment. 

He will not have internet access at his cousin's home.

Martinez said DiProto is not allowed to have contact with anyone under the age of 18.

DiProto suffers a heart condition and had to be rushed to an area hospital on the day of his arrest.

After his appearance in court, DiProto did not have comment for Eyewitness News.

His next court appearance is May 22.

If convicted, DiProto could face up to 20 years in prison.
