HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has ordered the U.S. and Connecticut flags to half-staff for Wednesday because of National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

The holiday is a way to recognize efforts of the men and women in law enforcement and corresponds with police week.

"We are deeply appreciative of the work law enforcement does, both to protect and give aid to the citizens of Connecticut, as well as to offer their expertise and talents in our communities," Malloy said in a statement. "We honor the sacrifices made by these officers, and will always remember those who gave their lives in the line of duty."

The flags will remain at half-staff until sunset Wednesday.
