MILFORD, CT (WFSB) -

The rush is on to get beaches ready for the busy Memorial Day weekend. Many are still suffering from major damage from Hurricane Sandy and Blizzard Charlotte.

The Silver Sands Beach Boardwalk in Milford was completely taken out by Sandy in some sections. For months, beach walkers have had to make their way around the damage and climb back up onto the boardwalk to continue their walk.

"We used to be able to go straight through, but we were all hoping they would hurry up an fix it because we love it here," said Susan Laseloa of Milford, who was walking along the beach Tuesday.

Crews wanted the boardwalk repaired, but there was a shortage of marine grade pressure treated wood because so many areas up and down the eastern seaboard needed it. A state contractor started the repairs this week and should be done by Memorial Day.

In Westport, crews told Eyewitness News they will have a boardwalk and bath house ready by Memorial Day. But in Fairfield, the news is not as good.

The popular walkway out to the pier was altered and still under construction. The main beach pavilion will not be open this summer after it was open for its first full year last summer.

The state says some of their public beaches still have debris they are clearing but they are all set to be fully operational by Memorial Day, when summer unofficially kicks off.
