Metro police have arrested two Las Vegas bail bondsmen, accused of assaulting and extorting money and property from clients.
John Kevin McCabe, 61, was arrested on Monday. Police said Charles McChesney, 48, turned himself in at Clark County Detention Center on Wednesday.
"This is obviously a case that we felt that the conduct was of a nature that we felt it was absolutely critical we bring these charges," said Senior Deputy Attorney General Jeff Segal.
According to his criminal complaint, on or about June 18, 2010, McCabe entered into a bail agreement with a female client. He allegedly charged over $14,000 to her credit cards without authorization. After the charges were stopped, McCabe allegedly kidnapped the woman from her room at Budget Suites, held her in his vehicle for three hours, and demanded money and personal property.
The complaint goes on to say McCabe handcuffed the woman and forced her to sign a personal check naming him as payee, made her give him her debit card and PIN number, then used the card to withdraw money from her bank accounts.
"Once (McCabe) had obtained a significant amount of money, he took her down and surrendered her to the Clark County Detention Center anyway," said Segal.
The complaint details another alleged incident in which McCabe is accused of forcing another female client to sign personal documents, including power of attorney, on or about April 8, 2012. McCabe is also alleged to have kidnapped this victim for a period of more than 24 hours in order to extort money and property from her.
The third alleged incident occurred on or about Jan. 18, 2011. In this instance, McCabe is alleged to have forced a female client to sign documents, including power of attorney. McCabe and McChesney allegedly broke down the woman's door and held her and her three young children at gunpoint while taking her personal property.
McCabe runs Boomer's Bail Bonds, also known as AAABeduation Bail Bonds, in Las Vegas. McChesney is a licensed bail enforcement agent who operates under the name Justice Inc. in Las Vegas.
McCabe is charged with 19 felonies, including kidnapping, robbery with use of a deadly weapon, home invasion, assault with a deadly weapon, grand larceny and theft.
McChesney is charged with robbery with use of a deadly weapon, assault, home invasion, burglary and grand larceny.
"The arrest of the bail bondsman sends a clear message that the severity of their alleged crimes will simply not be tolerated," said Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto. "The defendants will be held accountable for breaking the law. My office will continue our partnership with Nevada Division of Insurance to help protect those residing in the Silver State."
