It's been a year since a massive fire ripped through the Bevin Brothers Bell Factory in East Hampton, and as "Bell Town, USA" celebrated Memorial Day with its yearly parade, many there celebrated the face the company is still in business.

Waving Old Glory, parade lovers of all ages lined the center of town Monday morning.

The marching bands, the fire trucks and veterans who served their country proudly were all there.

"Many of us have some relation or friend that's been in the service and know someone that's lost their lives over the years," Mary Schnieder said. "It's just a reminder to pay homage to them."

But as the close-knit town pays honor to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, many are also remembering what happened one year ago Monday at the Bevin Brothers Bell Factory.

A lightning strike led to a devastating fire that nearly killed the family business and a piece of East Hampton.

"That alone brought everyone to tears," Roger Law said. "It was sad - very sad - yet uplifting that they were able to rebuild and get it back on track again."

The name Bevin is synonymous with Bell Town. They've been here since the early 1800s and there's a street with the family name. So, when people say it's the fabric of East Hampton, they mean it.

Over the weekend, Matt Bevin, the owner, posted a thank you on the company's Facebook page. On it he said not only has it been the company's most challenging year, but also the most inspiring.

Bevin writes, "When we lost everything in the fire, we were not immediately sure we would be able to rebuild. However, with the overwhelming support we have received from people like you, we have been able to rise from the ashes."

Just a few months after the flames ripped through the large factory, they set up shop at a nearby empty warehouse and started cranking out bells once again.
