(CNN) -- This year, the Cannes Film Festival celebrated a homegrown film as a French title took the top prize

"La vie d'Adèle," known in English as "Blue Is the Warmest Color," won the Palme d'Or on Sunday as the film festival drew to a close. In addition to director Abdellatif Kechiche, stars Léa Seydoux ("Midnight in Paris"; "Inglourious Basterds") and Adèle Exarchopoulos were also honored with the prestigious Palme.

Kechiche's three-hour film is an intimate portrait of a romance between two young lesbians, one that critics have hailed as having both heat and heart.

The 2013 Cannes jury, which included Nicole Kidman, Christoph Waltz, Ang Lee and Steven Spielberg as jury president, was equally enthralled with the Coen brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis," which won the Grand Prix.

Written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, the film tells the story of an aspiring folk singer/songwriter named Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) as he works through the folk music scene in Greenwich Village in the early '60s. Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garrett Hedlund and John Goodman also star.

Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" didn't depart unloved, either, as Bruce Dern picked up the best actor award for his work in "The Descendants" director's new drama. Working from a screenplay penned by Bob Nelson, Dern stars as an older man living with dementia who travels from Montana to Nebraska with his son to claim a prize he thinks he's won.

"The Artist's" Bérénice Bejo was the winner of this year's best actress prize for her work in "Le Passé (The Past)," a drama about an Iranian man who leaves his wife and two kids for his homeland and learns of his wife's new relationship when she asks for a divorce.
