House panel OKs abortion bill, debating Medicaid

PHOENIX (AP) -

An Arizona House panel has advanced a measure that bans public dollars from indirectly supporting abortion providers and allows snap inspections of abortion clinics.

The proposal approved by the House Appropriations committee Monday is being pushed by the powerful anti-abortion group Center for Arizona Policy. It passed on a 7-4 party-line vote Monday with Republicans supporting the measure and now goes to the full House.

No federal or state dollars can be used to fund abortions, but the anti-abortion organization believes groups like Planned Parenthood subsidize abortion services with money from other health care funding.

The Center also wants to remove a requirement that a warrant is needed for an unannounced inspection. Opponents contend both provisions are illegal.

The House panel next debates Gov. Jan Brewer's Medicaid expansion plan.
