Authorities in Baldwin County, AL confirm that 26-year-old Matthew Hattaway drowned over the weekend while vacationing in Gulf Shores.
GULF SHORES, AL (KSLA) -
A 25-year-old Ark-La-Tex man drowned over the weekend while vacationing along the Gulf Coast.
The Baldwin County, AL Sheriff's Office confirms that 25-year-old Matthew Hattaway was one of three drownings along the beaches in their county, along with four other close calls.
They say there had been red flag warnings up all weekend. Authorities say Hattaway was one of two men who drowned in the dangerous rip currents on the Alabama coast, and searchers are looking for a third person who hasn't been seen since going under.
Authorities say all three people were swimming on Fort Morgan Peninsula near Gulf Shores when they got into trouble.
Baldwin County Coroner Stanley Vinson says Hattaway was pronounced dead about 3 p.m. Sunday. A relative spotted him floating in the surf.
According to family members, Hattaway was trying to rescue a youngster from a rip current. The sheriff's office has not been able to confirm the details of Hattaway's drowning, however.
Hattaway went to Southwood High School and the University of Monroe, and was reportedly recently engaged and living in Bossier City.
